Karelia House is the result of a real passion for all things Scandinavian and a love affair with Finland spanning 2 decades and involving many wonderful business trips to Helsinki (including just a wee bit of shopping) and resulting in Little Finland in the middle of Scotland!
Karelia House has evolved over the past 5 years and is owned and run by Shirley and Doug Shearer and their daughter and son-in-law, Sam and Ewan Weir. On the site of an old sawmill dating back to the early 1920’s and then the timber yard of Shirley’s Dad, Karelia House is now a modern showroom with a unique shopping experience with a new Scandinavian style coffee shop and craft centre.
The new craft centre has so many inspirational materials - fabulous yarns from Colinette, Noro, Mirasol, Arucania and they are not just about knitting you can also use them for weaving or felting. There is the most superb range of Stewart Gill paints for fabrics and other mediums and you will be shown all sorts of ways to create wonderful and exciting pieces – one of our courses, Tessellations, is so fabulous using the Stewart Gill paint in combination with some of our metallic threads from Superior threads. The very latest selection of Bali Batiks is now on the shelves and we have all the essential ingredients including Superior’s King Tut and Rainbow threads to keep quilters and patchworkers busy and inspired. Our selection of beads and bead making equipment and accessories is increasing almost daily as well as accessories and iridescent spray paints for paper and card. We can even teach you how to make silk paper and then embroider it for a book cover!
As Enerfoil Magnum grew, Karelia House was built mainly to accommodate the Magnum Underfloor Heating business and technical office for the range of heating products. The company has a major interest in promoting energy and environmentally friendly products and the range of efficient modern wood burning stoves from Nibe and the UK manufacturer, Woodwarm. Working models and comfy chairs help you soak up the ambience even if you are only waiting for your wife or partner to browse through the gifts and crafts!
There a wonderful selection of gifts including glassware from Iittala, Boda Nova and Muurla and the ubiquitous Marimekko bags, socks, nighties and kitchenware. There are modern tableware and candle holders from the Swedish company, Farg Form, beautiful blankets from Klippan and fabulous colourful wooden jewellery from Aarikka. This is the place to visit if you are looking for a gift for the person who you think has everything or the couple you want to buy an unusual wedding or anniversary present for.
The sauna is so much part of Finnish culture, we have gone for the best saunas from Joensuu Puukaluste in spruce, pine or alder and there are a variety of sizes to choose from. Sauna accessories are also available in a variety of sizes with some real exclusive, naturally heat retaining soapstone sauna stoves from Mondex.
The adventure continues outside where there are grill houses with Kota grills from Rakennustempo – Scandinavians don’t let weather stop them barbequing all year!
