TWO DAY CREATIVE & CRAFTING EVENT WITH SARAH LAWRENCE
15th & 16th September 2010
Karelia House is holding a two-day creative crafting event with the extremely talented textile artist, Sarah Lawrence. This will take place on the 15th & 16th September, with Sarah teaching and sharing techniques with a selection of craft materials. Also an opportunity to view work from her book, Silk Paper for Textile Artists.
Background
Sarah spent some ten years teaching art and textiles in secondary schools in Yorkshire, before leaving to start her family. She now works as a freelance textile artist and tutor. She exhibits her work widely, having taken part in over 40 group exhibitions since 1991, as well as several solo exhibitions.
Sarah runs many courses on felting, embroidery, beading and surface construction etc. for a diverse range of groups.
International Experience
Sarah was a participant in the first International Felt Congress in Kyrgyzstan. She participated in the conference, interviewed by CNN and travelled into some of the remote areas where felt is still part of the living culture. This first event established a continuing experience that is now an organised opportunity for felt-makers to visit the roots of a felt-making culture.
In Finland Sarah was a guest international tutor at the specialist textile department at Petajavesi Institute. Sarah has also taught in Jersey where she was the inaugural guest speaker at the launch of the Jersey Textile Group.
In 2004 Sarah was the guest of the Stitch, Craft and Knit Show in Perth, where she exhibited her current work and taught several groups in Western Australia and again in 2008.
Sarah has also taught in Canada and Ireland.
Numbers are limited, please call us to book your place as soon as possible.
Our spring/summer felting starts on Tuesday 18 May at 7.00 – 9.30 p.m where you will learn everything from the basic making of felt to some gloriously colourful masterpieces – from whacky tea cosies and arty wall hangings to chunky jewellery – Caroline is never short of ideas to inspire. Some stitching and embellishment of your felt will also be part of this session. We will be having a class every couple weeks but you can dip in and out as you like (just call us on 01887 822999). It is not as complicated as many people think and you will certainly be delighted with your results. There is a super selection of wool and silk tops to choose from and the funkiest Gillian Gladrag kits which are great even as a gift for a ‘crafty’ friend. The atmosphere at the class is always relaxed so come and have a go – you will be made so very welcome.
Patchwork and Quilting has been going from strength to strength and so popular that the regular Wednesday evening class is full. However, there are spaces on the Monday afternoon class (1.30 – 5.00pm) but it is essential to call and confirm your place.
We will be adding some individual classes such as foundation piecing, log cabin chicken, Japanese folded patchwork and hand appliqué. This list will be on the website and also emailed to you shortly.
