It has taken a little longer than we planned but we have so many exciting products to choose from we really were spoiled for choice. The main inspiration behind this new venture at Karelia House is Kit Strathairn who is just such a talented artist - her visions and techniques with different materials, textiles, threads and paints seems endless. Kit will be taking many of the workshops so please give her a call or drop in if you have any questions. We have fabulous yarns from Colinette, Noro, Mirasol, Arucania and they are not just about knitting (although I have to say we already have some real knitting yarn junkies in the area) – you can also use them for weaving or felting. We have the most superb range of Stewart Gill paints for fabrics and other mediums and Kit will show you all sorts of ways to create wonderful and exciting pieces – one of our courses, Tessellations, is so fabulous using the Stewart Gill paint in combination with some of our metallic threads from Superior threads. The very latest selection of Bali Batiks is now on the shelves and we have all the essential ingredients including Superior’s King Tut and Rainbow threads to keep quilters and patchworkers busy and inspired.
Our selection of beads and bead making equipment and accessories is increasing almost daily as well as accessories and iridescent spray paints for paper and card. We can even teach you how to make silk paper and then embroider it for a book cover!
We have also been lucky enough to retain the services of Caroline Pearce to run the felting workshops and her work is amazing. She lived on the Falkland Islands for a few years so wool was a big part of life there – she even felted her own wedding dress when she married the then Governor of the Falklands, Howard Pearce. We have a beautiful selection of wool, silk and bamboo tops and the felting workshops provide an opportunity to make a wide variety of very individual gifts and garments. You will see on our list that there is a series of 4 workshops spread over a few weeks and this will help give you a real chance to do things you never thought possible even as a beginner.
Kit has an equally talented sister, Susie, who has just moved to Aberfeldy and her speciality is silk painting. Again don’t be put off by thinking you need to be an artist, you will be amazed at what you’ll be able to achieve under Susie’s guidance. We have all the silk paints, frames and materials in stock. And for anyone who just wants to try out the silk paint we have a selection of pre-gutta silk scarves, cushion covers etc.
We are hoping to encourage youngsters to take up some crafts and there is everything from learning to knit, needle felting, beading and so much more. Just get in touch if you have a young person who would like to explore our range.
What we can promise is that you will have an enjoyable time trying out new techniques and creating wonderful pieces – you will probably make some new friends as well. We are keeping the workshops to a maximum of 4 – 6 people so as you get the best out of each course. Our coffee shop will provide you
