Jacqui Grant the Shetland knitter is hosting a lace knitting workshop here at Karelia House Yarn and Fabric.

Learn to knit traditional Shetland lace cockleshell, this skill can be transferred to make a cowl, scarf or baby knits.

Want to learn something different? Learn to make traditional Shetland cockleshell lace.

Based on a Kate Davis interpretation of a Shetland original lace design. This pattern will teach basic lace stitches to achieve the scallop shape You will be taught Shetland lace knitting skills. Through guided instruction, participants will learn to work the key elements of cockleshell lace, including stitch structure, pattern reading and maintainiing tension and accuracy in lace knitting. We will create practise samples during the class, allowing time to understand the construction and build confidence with the techniques.

Knitting techniques include, knit, purl, knit through back and front of the stitch and decreasing multiple stitches together and so would suit the intermediate to advanced knitter, who would like to learn a new technique.

Skills covered include:

~Reading and working the cockleshell lace charts and written pattern instructions.

~Understanding Shetland lace structure

~Managing repeats

~Tips for achieving even tension in lace knitting

Light refreshments will be provided, as well as a light lunch.

Kate Davies Betty Mouat cowl pattern is included in the class fee. Please bring your own needles, 3mm 60mm circular as well as stitch markers. There will be an opportunity to buy wool to start knitting the cowl either in class or afterwards.

Yarn used will be West Yorkshire Spinners Solstice 4ply,  This wool is 70% Falkland Wool 20% Lyocell and 10% Cashmere. Light, luxurious and elegant, Solstice is the perfect natural fibre 4ply for the changing seasons.

Please bring your own needles, 3mm 60mm circular as well as stitch markers or these can be purchased instore.

Yarn is not included in the price of the workshop, this can be purchased separately. Colour choices will be email for you to choose and you will receive 10% discount. We will wind the yarn prior to the workshop so that it is ready for you to start knitting.

Materials to bring, darning needle or notion knit.

~ 10am Arrival , welcome and hot drinks will be served.

~ 10.30am Beginning of the workshop

~ 12.30pm Time for lunch ( PLEASE MAKE US AWARE OF ANY DIETRY REQUIREMENTS/ALLERGIES)

~2.30pm Hot drinks served with sweet treat.

~ 3.30pm  End of the day
